SEVEN SAYINGS

The Scriptures inform us that Christ spoke seven times while on the cross, and in the statements we see the tenderness of the Savior, the administration of salvation by Him, the unspeakable anguish of identification with man’s sin, the requirements of drink by one who is human, the trust of the Son in the will of the Father, and the declaration of victory and accomplishment.

Neither of the Gospels records all of the seven sayings, so the precise order is unknown; but the following is the traditional order:

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.
Lu. 23:34

Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
Lu. 23:43

Woman, behold your son! Behold your mother!
Jo. 19:26-27

My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
(Aramaic: Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachathani?)
Matt. 27:46; Mk. 15:34
perhaps referred to in Lu. 23:46

I thirst!
Jo. 19:28

It is finished!
Jo. 19:30

Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.
Lu. 23:46
