THE ABUSE OF WINE

Although the Scriptures never prohibit the use of wine (abstinence cannot be defended exegetically; to attempt to do so is dishonest), there are stern and direct warning against the abuse of wine. The wise man in Proverbs, the prophets in their writings, and Paul in the epistles call for moderation and condemn indulgence that leads to drunkenness and all the vices that are associated with inebriation. Particular warnings are issued to religious and political leaders. Even the question of one’s eternal state is related to the use of wine; plainly the Word of God states that drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Consideration will be given to the following topics:

        Warnings in the New Testament

        Warnings for Religious Leaders

        Warnings Concerning Eternity
